Martha Wise Martha W. Wise is the Ohio Board of Education's longest-serving active member. A resident of Avon Lake, she represents the territory from Lorain County west. Retired from BP Amoco, she is now in her 26th year on the State Board. Past President and Vice President, Wise chaired the Board's Standards Committee from 1993-1997, and continues to hold membership on the standards committee where she has been an outspoken advocate for strong science education. After holding several offices with the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), she became president-elect in 1982. She served on NASBE's Resolutions Committee; served on NASBE's Distance Learning Study Group; chaired a prior Study Group on Assessment and Accountability; was a member of their Study Group on School Leadership; and is currently chair of their Government Affairs Committee. Wise has made numerous other contributions to education at local, state, and national levels. She was president of both the Eastgate Elementary PTA and later the Elyria PTA Council. She also served as president of the Elyria City Board of Education. In 2000, she co-chaired the Governor's Commission for Student Success and more recently served as a vice chair of the Governor's Commission on Teaching Success. Wise has been honored by several awards, including NASBE's Distinguished Service Award, the Outstanding Layman's Award from the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators, and the State University Education Dean's Honor for Outstanding Leadership in Ohio Teacher Education. Wise attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Representing the Second State Board District, Wise serves the following counties: Erie, Huron, Lorain, Lucas, Wood, part of Ottawa, and part of Seneca. Wise's four-year term ends December 31, 2006. |
